Is willpower limited?
“Willpower is a limited resource” I used to say. “If you need to get something (that you don’t really feel like doing) done, do it first thing in the morning”(because you won’t actually do it if you wait until the end of the day to do it). While the statement is a good practice of responsibility, I realize now that by saying such a statement I might be doing disservice to some people.
When I was researching, I came across different studies saying that willpower was limited (this is known as “Ego depletion”). But apparently, this idea seems to not be scientifically backed. In fact, the studies said that those who had the ego depletion mindset often were outperformed by those who did not have the ego depletion mindset. So, for your productivity and for your mental health I ask of you that we start thinking about it differently. I’m also to blame here since I still have this notion ingrained in my head.
The conclusion of this short article is willpower is not limited. We do not have a limited number of choices a day. We can and should have the mindset that we really can do the things we have to do. It probably isn’t easy as it isn’t for me. However, I think the results would be worthwhile if we manage to get this mindset to stick. So, let’s get disciplined and stop making excuses for our poor behavior. I understand there are many variables in our life, but I would say the majority of people numerous ways to improve their life. We can start with short goals and go onto bigger ones with momentum.
